Magdalena Kožená was born in Brno, studied at the Brno Conservatoire and with Eva Blahová at the College of Performing Arts in Bratislava. She was awarded several major prizes in both the Czech Republic and internationally, culminating in the 6th International Mozart Competition in Salzburg in 1995.

She is an exclusive artist with Deutsche Grammophon, and her first solo recital disc of Dvorak, Janacek and Martinu won the Gramophone Solo Vocal Award, 2001. Recent recordings with DG include Mozart, Gluck and Myslivecek arias with the Prague Philharmonia and Michel Swierczewski; French arias with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Minkowski; Gluck’s “Paride ed Elena” with the Gabrieli Consort and McCreesh; a recital with Malcolm Martineau; and an acclaimed disc of cantatas by members of the Bach family (“Lamento”) with Musica Antiqua Koeln and Reinhard Goebel. Future releases include a Mozart album with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Sir Simon Rattle, and a Handel disc with the Venice Baroque and Andrea Marcon. She was the 2004 Gramophone Awards Artist of the Year.

Magdalena Kožená is well established as a major concert and recital artist. Recital appearances have taken her to London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Vienna, Hamburg, Lisbon, Prague, Copenhagen, Tokyo, San Francisco, and New York’s Carnegie Hall. She has also appeared at the Munich, Salzburg, Schwarzenberg Schubertiade, Aldeburgh and Edinburgh festivals.

Her concert appearances include the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and the Philadelphia Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle; the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Sir Charles Mackerras; the Wiener Philharmoniker and Daniel Harding; and the Accademia Santa Cecilia with Myung-Whun Chung.

Operatic engagements have included Gluck’s “Orphée” with Gardiner in Paris; Nerone (“L’Incoronazione di Poppea”) with Minkowski in Vienna; Mélisande with Minkowski in Leipzig and Paris; Cherubino in Aix-en-Provence and Munich; Sesto (“Giulio Cesare”) in Amsterdam. At the Salzburg Festivals her roles have included Zerlina (“Don Giovanni”) with Harnoncourt, Idamantes with Norrington and Rattle and Dorabella with Rattle. At the Metropolitan Opera she has sung Varvara (“Katja Kabanova”) with Belohlavek and Cherubino, Dorabella and Idamantes with Levine.

Magdalena Kožená returns to Paris for Melisande at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées for Mélisande with Haitink. Other future engagements include the title role in the premiere of Henze’s “Phaedra” at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin and La Monnaie in Brussels, and her debut appearance at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in the title role of “La Cenerentola”.

In 2003 she was awarded the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government.

prl-Weltklasse Konzert der Star- Sopranistin zu den Festtagen

Die tschechische Mezzo-Sopranistin Magdalena Kozená war die Solistin dieses Konzertabends aus dem Brüsseler Palast der schönen Künste, übertragen von Arte . Kozená interpretierte Arien aus Opern und Oratorien von Georg Friedrich Händel. Sie sang unter anderem With Darkness aus “Theodora” HWV 68, Cara speme aus “Giulio Cesare in Egitto” HWV 17 und Scherza infida in grembo al drudo und Dopo notte aus “Ariodante” HWV 33. Begleitet wurde sie vom Venice Baroque Orchestra unter Leitung seines Gründers und Chefdirigenten Andrea Marcon.

Magdalena Kozená wollte eigentlich Pianistin werden, musste aber nach einer schweren Verletzung an der Hand ihren Traum aufgeben. 1987 begann sie am Brünner Konservatorium Gesang zu studieren. Von 1991 bis 1995 wechselte sie in die Akademie für darstellende Künste in Bratislava. Ihr Operndebüt hatte sie 1996 mit der Dorabella in Mozarts “Cosi fan tutte” in Brno.
Ihren großen Durchbruch schaffte Kozená 2000, als sie bei den Wiener Festwochen als Nero in Monteverdis “Krönung der Poppea” für Anne Sofie von Otter einsprang. Magdalena Kozená hat in ihrer Laufbahn als Sängerin bereits zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen erhalten. Leben

Kožená, die sich seit frühen Kindertagen gewünscht hat, Pianistin zu werden, begann im Alter von acht Jahren mit dem Klavierspielen. Eine schwere Handverletzung beendete im Alter von zwölf Jahren die Pläne einer Karriere als Pianistin. Nach einem Wechsel ins Gesangsfach begann sie 1987 ein Gesangsstudium als Mezzosopranistin am Brünner Konservatorium, das sie 1991 an der Akademie für Musik und darstellende Künste in Bratislava bei Eva Blahová fortsetzte. 1995, im Jahr ihres Diploms, gewann sie bereits den 6. Internationalen Mozart-Wettbewerb in Salzburg.

Ihr erstes Engagement war 1996 am Janáček-Theater in Brno - Dorabella in „Cosi fan tutte“. Es folgte die Wiener Volksoper; seither arbeitet sie freischaffend. Ihren großen Durchbruch hatte Magdalena Kožená 2000, als sie bei den Wiener Festwochen für die erkrankte Anne Sofie von Otter einsprang - als Nero in Monteverdis „Die Krönung der Poppea“. Ihr ständiger musikalischer Partner ist der Pianist Graham Johnson.

2002 heiratete sie den französischen Bariton Vincent le Texier, den sie jedoch 2004 für Sir Simon Rattle verließ. Der gemeinsame Sohn Jonas kam im März 2005 in Salzburg zur Welt; Kožená und Rattle leben in Berlin.
